It’s simply the first letter of traditional courtesy titles—Mr., Mrs., Ms., or Miss—left there so guests could neatly complete their name in a more formal era of correspondence. Today, many people have never been taught that convention, which is why it can feel oddly intimidating for such a small detail.
If you see it, you can safely write whatever you actually use: “Mr. Daniel Ortiz,” “Ms. Jordan Lee,” or just “Taylor Morgan.” Clarity matters more than tradition. And if you’re the one creating invitations, you’re free to skip the “M” entirely and write “Name(s)” instead. The real purpose of an RSVP isn’t to measure anyone’s manners.
